Your Mama always told you to do the right thing, right? Here’s my version of ‘doing the right thing’.
I was contacted recently by a couple looking to buy a home in Barrie. Perfect!
So I started a search and was getting organized to set up my initial meeting with this wonderful couple (who have a new baby) and I got a call. ‘John, we appreciate your help so far. The only thing we need to change is the location. We have decided the home has to be in Newmarket’. Ugh! This could be a problem. Am I an expert on Newmarket? Do I know all the details of the Real Estate market in Newmarket? Do I know where the best schools are, where the sports facilities are, where the landfill site is, what the prevailing winds are, where the Hospital is located? You get the picture. So the clients seem great and I love working for my clients but am I the best person for them in Newmarket?
Sadly no. So, who is the best person?
I have a niece who is a sales representative at a brokerage in Newmarket. She and I have worked together in the past and she is very good at what she does. She has a young family and would be perfect for these people. I connected them and have already heard back that they are getting along wonderfully and enjoy working together. That’s what I wanted to hear and I am so glad things are working out. The wrong option would have been for me to pretend to know about Newmarket and try to sell these people a home just to earn a commission cheque. Don’t get me wrong: commission cheques are what I live off. But doing the right thing has to win out every time. Doing what’s best for the client has to be my priority every time.
