OK Barrie, what are you doing tonight between 8:30 – 9:30? Will YOU take part in Earth Hour? Perhaps your children did something special at school yesterday afternoon.
Today, join millions of people across the globe by turning your electronics off for an hour. The idea is to raise awareness of climate change, global warming and how much electricity we really use. Especially now with all of the iPhones, iPads, and other compact computer/smart phone combos, everyone seems to be constantly plugged into something to get the latest news on Twitter or Facebook, or to post pics on Instragram or Snapchat.
I like that Earth Hour happens every year. I like the part about becoming unplugged from the rest of the world for an hour. But I also like to remember what it was like before all of today’s convenient technology. Sometimes I miss the simplicity of doing a puzzle with someone else, playing cards, talking, reading a book. Now I find that the TV goes on and even though we’re all sitting in the same room, we’re all looking down at a little device of some kind totally oblivious to those around us.
Yes, I care about the earth and I worry about what things will be like for my grandchildren, and their children. I worry a lot. I worry about the extreme weather that seems to be hitting parts of the world with increasing frequency and intensity and I wonder when we’ll be affected. I worry about how we will be powering our homes in generations to come.
So, take a minute today to check out www.earthhour.org and see what this is all about. And join me tonight at 8:30…turn off your lights and light some candles. Make it a fun family night and think about the world!
