Being in the real estate business in Barrie Ontario allows me opportunities to see all sorts of driveways. There are asphalt, gravel, concrete and unistone driveways all across Simcoe County. Sometimes I wonder which type is really the best. Do driveways really add curb appeal?
As I drive around looking at homes I often see signs for paving companies. I see people re-sealing their own driveways. I see home owners having their old asphalt driveway ripped out and getting ready for a new unistone driveway. There are still others who decide on poured or stamped concrete. Sometimes I wonder which treatment is best? Is it worth it to spend the extra money for a design that you drive on? What about cleaning up leaks from vehicles, and what about damage from frost heaves or snow blowers?
About a year ago we decided to have our driveway ripped out and redone. We had been ignoring the heaving and cracking long enough and knew it was time to get it fixed. It had become impossible to properly shovel it in the winter and it was often dangerous to walk on in the summer, all due to the deep indents! So, we gathered quotes from three different companies and were surprised at how different they all were. There was a significant difference in the prices and I’m not sure that there was much difference in how the work would be done.
We picked the company that we were most confident with and are extremely happy with the results. It makes such a big improvement for the curb appeal of our home. We prefer the look of a quality paved driveway, but have seen some very nice stamped concrete or unistone drives. I think it depends on personal taste, personal budget, and what you hope to accomplish. Are you going to change your driveway to please yourself or are you thinking about selling? Perhaps you’ve just moved in and want something fresh and new. Whatever the reason, I do believe that a well kept drive holds tremendous value for your home’s overall look. Shop around, plan ahead, visit jobs that companies have completed and ask the customer is they’re happy with the work. Then you’re sure you’re getting your money’s worth.
