America has spoken. Clinton actually got more votes, but the ones Trump got counted for more. I wonder what we expected when we woke up this morning? Remember when our whole computer system was supposed to crash when the clock hit January 1, 2000? Well, we all woke up that morning and things were the same as the were the night before. That’s kind of how I feel right now, except things aren’t really the same as they were when I went to sleep. America has spoken. The American people wanted something different, and they made that happen. Populations who hadn’t been compelled to vote in years past all of a sudden turned up. Others were so upset with their two options that they either stayed home, or they wrote in someone else’s name on their ballot.
There are so many reports this morning about what will change: free trade with Canadians, abortion rights, gay rights, immigration rules, pot laws and gun laws, investments and currency values. I found it funny when I read that MacLean’s magazine set up cameras at a border crossing to see if they could get footage of people sneaking across to Canada!
I’m glad that my kids are old enough to understand what just happened. One of my daughters is currently living in the US while she attends University, and I look forward to getting her view on things.
I tried really hard to NOT write about the US election today, but I can’t get it out of my mind. I actually find it extremely interesting that Trump was successful in his quest for the top job in the US. Maybe things won’t get as bad as we expect. There are those out there who have said he won’t be able to change the world on a whim, but I’m still a little afraid of what is to come. I watched some of the National interview with Malcolm Gladwell a few days ago. He was very calm and positive, and also thought that Trump might end up in jail within a year due to his ongoing legal issues. All I know for sure is that American people wanted something other than what Hillary Clinton brought to the table, and they got it!
