With all the focus on our crazy Barrie real estate market in the past few months, I think it’s a positive development that in the past couple of weeks we’ve heard about three opportunities for new housing in Barrie.
Between the YMCA site, Barrie Central Collegiate and Prince of Wales locations, and the development plans for Salem & Essa areas, I feel relieved that we are attempting to increase access to affordable housing in and around the City of Barrie. The Barrie Examiner has been a good source of information regarding all three of these recently announced developments. Back on March 27th, a Barrie Examiner article talked about the Y, located on Grove St, and how they are seriously considering selling that land and relocating in Barrie’s downtown core. The land at Grove St has a great deal of potential. The article states: ‘The new residential development on Grove could include 924 apartment suites, an amenity area for residents and underground parking for all four buildings. It could also significantly address Barrie’s need for rental housing, increase affordable housing and provide a new neighbourhood park.’
On March 30th, The Barrie Examiner ran an article talking specifically about the site of Barrie Central Collegiate and Prince of Wales, which changed hands at the end of January. The new owners, HIP Developments, are talking about a residential project called ‘Modern Bayside Residences’ and the current zoning of this site allows for many residential uses. It will be interesting to see what eventually is built here.
There is an article in today’s Barrie Examiner that address what was discussed at last night’s Barrie City Council meeting with respect to a new South Barrie development.
‘A public meeting was held Monday for a rezoning and draft plan of subdivision to build 487 residential units and neighbourhood commercial at 851 Essa Rd.
To be called Bear Creek Ridge, the developers are Crisdawn Construction and Barrie Financial. The residential will be a mix of single-family homes, townhouses and four-storey apartment buildings.’
It’s very early in the process, but it certainly shows that Barrie’s residential growth isn’t even close to being finished!
